The Lowdown

Maine Juniors Ultimate has been growing by leaps and bounds thanks to your efforts to put together and mentor teams, drum up interest, and organize tournaments! The Ultimate community in Maine will sorely miss the hard work that Robyn Turner put into Juniors Ultimate in the state, but Maine’s loss is Georgia’s gain. We wish her the best of luck in Atlanta. For those of you who don’t know, she coached Sanford High School’s team and put Maine Juniors Ultimate on the Maine map by organizing the 1 st annual Sanford and Sun Tourney during the spring of 2004. Robyn has passed on the organization of Maine Juniors Ultimate to a variety of Maine Ultimate players and we can only hope to live up to the high standards she has set.

Rich Young, Nick Bresinsky, Zac Gilhooley, and Aaron Hoshide have volunteered their energy to this project. So far, Rich, Nick, Zac, and Aaron have focused on liaison efforts with the UPA, planning the Maine High School State Championships coming this spring, and working in and for schools at the grassroots level. In the future, we hope to define our mission, goals, and roles more clearly, but for now this is how things are getting done. We invite your participation and involvement at this early stage of our history and to help us grow along side high school Ultimate in Maine.

UPA Juniors News

Starting the 2005 spring season, the UPA will transition the final Juniors tournament from one Juniors National event to two separate events: Easterns and Westerns. This was done to encourage growth as more teams will be able to participate. Easterns will be held in Pittsburgh, PA, on the weekend of May 21-22, 2005 (http://www1.upa.org/juniors/championships/2005_easterns/championships.shtml).

According to the UPA, last May’s Sanford and Sun Tourney will serve as the qualifier for Easterns 2005, as we have no state championship. Any team that played in Sanford and Sun last spring will be eligible to submit bids to the UPA for Easterns 2005.

With the inauguration of the first MAINE STATE JUNIORS INVITATIONAL on SUNDAY, MAY 15, 2005, at Falmouth Community Park in Maine, we will have the appropriate Easterns 2006 qualifier. Please click here for DIRECTIONS.

Also, be on the lookout for Juniors hat tournaments popping up at fields near you. Hat tournaments are a great way for players on separate teams to meet and play with each other. And you don’t need to wait for us; organizing a hat tournament may not be as hard as you think. Get involved and help out! Start a team! Mentor a team! Organize a tournament! Together we can continue the great work that Robyn Turner set in motion!
